ANNAPOLIS, MD. –
Josh Heil and
Andrew Morgan both won their weight classes, leading Campbell Saturday at the Navy Classic at the Wesley Brown Field House.
The Camels finished fifth in the team standings (71.5 points) with champions at two weight classes, plus a runner-up and a third place finisher. Michigan State (126) took the team title with 10 placers, followed by Indiana (95.5), Navy (92) and Old Dominion (86).
Ohio (67.5), Bucknell (64.5), Kent State (62.5), Air Force (59.5) and Brown (54) rounded out the top 10 in the 16-team field.
Heil went a perfect 4-0 at 149 pounds, advancing with a 15-0 tech fall (3:44) over Justin Yorkdale of George Mason, followed by a 14-4 major decision over American's Kizhan Clarke. The redshirt sophomore's 3-0 win over Ohio's Alec Hagan put Heil into the 149 title match, where he defeated Tejon Anthony of George Mason 3-1.
Morgan opened the day with a 4-0 decision over Indiana's Dillon Hoey, then pinned Logan Stanley of Ohio (3:18) to move on. The redshirt junior edged Nick Stephani of Bucknell 4-3 before earning a 7-4 decision over Brown's Bryce Rogers. In the 174 championship bout, Morgan topped Edinboro's Jacob Oliver 12-6, finishing the tournament 5-0.
Two Camels placed a heavyweight, with
Odgerel Batkhishig taking runner-up honors and
Laith Alsous earning a third place showing.
Batkhishig posted a first round fall over Navy's Riley Smith (6:53), then topped Bucknell's Nathan Feyrer by a 9-0 major decision. The junior notched back-to-back decisions to advance to the title match, topping William Bolia of Kent State 12-5 and Christian Rebottaro of Michigan State 5-2. Ohio's Zack Parker edged Batkhishig 3-2 to close out the bracket.
Alsous won his first three matchups, topping American's Niko Camacho 3-1 before pinning Matt Wagner of Air Force (4:31). The redshirt freshman dealt Brown's Ian Butterbrodt a 3-1 decision before taking his first loss of the day, a 3-1 decision to Ohio's Parker. Alsous advanced through the bracket to third via no contest wins over Michigan State's Chase Beard and Old Dominion's William Hillard.
Also highlighting Campbell action on the day was
Nathan Boston, winning three straight in the 141 consolation bracket before falling to eventual fifth place finisher Garrett O'Shea of Air Force.
Paxton Rosen also advanced to the consolation bracket quarterfinal round at 125 pounds before Kilian Cardinale of Old Dominion bested the CU redshirt freshman 4-2.
Camels will be in action Sunday at the North Carolina State Wolfpack Open. Campbell will head to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational November 30-December 1.
