Heil places sixth at Cliff Keen Invite

LAS VEGAS, NEV. – Josh Heil placed sixth at 149 pounds, leading Campbell at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.

Heil was one of three Camels to advance to day two of the tournament, joined by Andrew Morgan (174 pounds) and Noah Gonser (133).

After leading off the tournament with an 11-2 major decision over North Idaho's Byrce Parson, Heil, seeded 10th, was topped by fifth-seeded Austin O'Connor of North Carolina by fall (1:39). The redshirt sophomore battled back with four-straight wins.

Heil advanced past American's Michael Sprague before defeating Stanford's Requir van der Merwe 7-2. He followed with a 12-2 major decision over Alec Opsal of Air Force, and a 4-2 sudden victory over No. 4 seed Max Thomsen from Northern Iowa, putting the Campbell 149-pounder through to the consolation semifinals.

He met Clarion's No. 6 Brock Zacherl, falling 10-6, and in the fifth place match, dropped a 9-4 decision to Duke's Mitch Finesilver, the tourney's No. 5 seed.

Morgan collected four wins over the weekend, topping Stanford's Rico Stormer with a 12-4 major decision in his opener, and Cody Hughes of Virginia Tech 6-4 in a sudden victory before falling to No. 1 Myles Amine of Michigan 8-2.

The redshirt junior finished Friday's action with two more wins, defeating Oklahoma's Anthony Mantanona 13-11, and Joseph Grello of Rutgers 3-2. Morgan exited with a 10-4 decision to No. 10 Devin Skatzka of Minnesota.

Gonser kicked off the tourney with a 4-0 decision over No. 5 Montorie Bridges from Wyoming, securing a spot in Saturday's action with a 3-2 decision over Navy's Casey Cobb. After a fall to No. 4 John Erneste of Missouri (1:15), Gonser was edged by No. 11 Cam Sykora of North Dakota State, 6-5, Saturday.

Nathan Boston also registered three wins in the tournament. After dropping a 14-2 major decision to Virginia Tech's Dominic Latona, Boston reeled off victories over Chris Deloza of Fresno State, a 2-0 decision, Hofstra's Garrett Lambert, a 13-0 major decision, and advanced past Utah Valley's Matt Findlay before Virginia's Samuel Krivus edged the CU redshirt senior 1-0.

Next up, the Camels will head to the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships December 29-30.
