Last time out
Campbell raced out to a 21-10 lead, but surrendered seven unanswered Coastal Carolina touchdowns,
falling to the FBS Chanticleers 58-21 at Barker-Lane Stadium. The game marked the first time a FBS program has visited a FCS foe in a true road game since Army traveled to Yale in 2014, and just the third time since 2008. The matchup was originally slated for Saturday, September 15 in Conway, S.C., but was shifted up three days and to Buies Creek due to the impending threat of Hurricane Florence.
Campbell found the end zone on its first three possessions, going up 21-10 after
Rocky Reid punched in a one yard run, set up by
Aaron Blockmon's 38-yard grab from
Daniel Smith. On CU's opening drive, Smith guided a 10-play, 80-yard march, finding
Caleb Snead alone in the end zone for the game's first score. It marked the first time this season that Campbell scored on its opening drive.
The Camels totaled 217 yards of offense through their first three possessions before being held to 89 over their final seven drives.
Leading the Camels
Daniel Smith owns 695 yards and five touchdowns passing, adding another 109 yards rushing and three more scores for the Camels. Smith's 695 yards through the air are the most ever by a Camel through the first three games of a season, surpassing
Elijah Burress' 2016 mark (558).
Rocky Reid has posted a team-high 199 rushing yards with two touchdowns, while
Caleb Snead has collected 227 yards receiving with three TDs.
Aaron Blockmon has hailed in a team-high 11 catches for 154 yards.
Jack Ryan leads the defense with 24 total stops, while
Dorian Jones and
Ray Miller own 18 apiece.
Deontae Henderson adds two interceptions, while
Terence Harper chips in 3.0 tackles for loss.
Snead again named Big South Freshman of the Week
For the second time in as many weeks, Campbell's
Caleb Snead has been named the
Big South's Freshman of the Week. Snead posted 72 yards and a touchdown on four catches against FBS member Coastal Carolina, leading the Camels in receiving yards for the second consecutive game.
The redshirt freshman from Lynchburg, Va. hauled in a TD catch for the third consecutive game, coming on the Camels' opening drive, an 18-yard pass from
Daniel Smith. Through three games, Snead owns 227 yards and three TDs on nine grabs.
Camels have taken Big South weekly honors
five times through three games.
CU defense at it again
The Campbell defense has picked up right where it left off in 2017, posting six takeaways through three games. The Camels picked off two Chowan passes in its 2018 opener, then forced and recovered three Georgetown fumbles in week two, adding another interception against Coastal Carolina. Last season, the Camels ranked among the nation's leaders (10th) in takeaways (27), aided by a school record 19 interceptions. Campbell has now posted a takeaway in 29 consecutive games (dating back to October 17, 2015 at Stetson), including all three games this season.
Scouting Shaw
The Division II Bears are 1-1 on the season, seeing their week three matchup and home opener Chowan postponed due to Hurricane Florence. Shaw opened the 2018 season with a 38-10 loss at future Big South member Hampton, and bounced back with a 27-9 win at Mars Hill.
Daniel Bender owns 171 yards and two touchdowns on 15 catches, while Keon Marsh has thrown for 413 yards and three TDs with one interception. Devon Hunt paces the Bears on the defensive side with 26 tackles, including 4.5 stops for loss with 2.0 sacks and a fumble recovery.
The Bears are one of seven first time opponents on Campbell's 2018 schedule.
Packing Barker-Lane
A greater-than capacity crowd of 5,624 turned out for the season opener and accounted for Campbell's 14th sellout since Barker-Lane Stadium was expanded to 5,500 seats in 2013. Campbell has averaged a sellout in each of the past two seasons, joining only Montana State and Mercer as one of three programs in FCS to accomplish the feat. Barker-Lane Stadium has set an overall attendance record in two straight, and five of the last six seasons.
