CLEMSON, S.C. - Amon Kemboi broke the Campbell school record and the Big South Conference record for the men's mile and claimed the mile title at the Bob Pollock Invitational Friday afternoon.
Kemboi broke his own school record in the men's mile competition with a time of 3:59.52. The Kapsabet, Kenya native's time was also enough to claim the Big South Conference record by passing Liberty's Josh McDougal who posted a time of 4:01.63 in 2006.
His performance surpassed his own record of 4:06.16, set at the Big South Indoor Championship last season, by nearly seven seconds.
Among a field full of power-five competition and unattached runners, his time was also good enough to pace over four seconds in front of the second place finisher David Barney, an unattached runner, who posted a 4:03.62 mark.
Kemboi's time currently ranks third nationally among mile times this season just behind Jonathan Davis (3:58.06) of Illinois and Texas' Alex Rogers (3:59.01). The top 16 marks for each event qualify for the NCAA Championships held in Birmingham, Ala March 8-9.
Kemboi's indoor mile school record marks the second indoor school record of his career. He claimed the men's 5K record at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener earlier this season with a time of 13:33.64 which currently ranks second among the nation's leaders.
