Camels set for season opener

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Fighting Camels are set for Opening Day 2022 as they welcome Appalachian State to Jim Perry Stadium. The season gets underway Friday night at 5 p.m. followed by a 3 o'clock first-pitch on Saturday and a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.

Campbell is coming off a 37-18 season in 2021 that saw the program win the Big South regular season title for the third straight year and earn its first at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. App State went 21-31 with an 11-10 record in the Sun Belt, good for a fourth-place finish in the Sun Belt's east division. You can get the full breakdown of the 2022 season here.

Series History
The Camels and Mountaineers have met 14 times in the series, with Campbell holding a 9-4-1 edge. The program's have not met since a neutral site matchup in 2016, where Campbell came away with a 9-4 win at Holly Spring's Ting Park. 

About the Mountaineers
App State is guided by sixth-year head coach Kermit Smith, who owns a 91-140 record at App. 

The pitching staff is led by Tyler Tuthill, the projected Friday-night starter. Tuthill was an all-Sun Belt selection in 2021, having ranked first in the league and 15th in the nation in hits allowed per nine last season (5.07). 

App returns four defensive starters from last season with Luke Drumheller leading the group. The junior second baseman was all-Sun Belt a year ago batting a team-high .289. Another junior, Andrew Terrell, will be a factor across the diamond for the Mountaineers having made starts at seven different positions in 2021. 

The Mountaineers were a sound defensive team last season with a fielding percentage of .976, putting them in the top-50 nationally.

Game Coverage
Friday and Sunday will both be streamed on ESPN+. Evan Budrovich will provide play-by-play for both. He'll be joined in the booth by Cole Hallum on Friday and CJ Jones on Sunday.

Saturday will have audio-only coverage, available on GoCamels.com. Paul McDonald will be on the call. 

Attendance Policies
Gates will open 90 minutes prior to first pitch. Parking is available at Jim Perry Stadium and behind Gore Arena. Campbell's clear bag policy will be in effect.
