Box Score BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell battled South Carolina to a 1-1 draw in its season opener Thursday at Eakes Athletics Complex.
South Carolina nearly put one away just eight minutes into the game but the shot was cleared off the line by Teva Lossec. The Gamecocks found the back of the net in the 25th minute when Adam Luckhurst scored off an assist from Martin Yahia.
Just over two minutes into the second half, Adam Yousfi leveled the game for the Camels on a direct free kick goal.
"It was a hard fought game," said Campbell head coach Dustin Fonder. "Our group is a young group but we're going to add a lot more layers as we get better. We showed great character after going down a goal and getting one back. We would've wanted more, but where we are in the season I think this is a good starting point."
Marco Wright nearly put the Camels ahead in the 77th minute after receiving a great through pass from Adrien Gameiro but his shot went just wide of goal.
Campbell finished with a 10-8 edge in shots, 6-3 in shots on target, while the Gamecocks held a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks. Samy Slimi finished with one save in between the posts for CU while Ben Alexander had five stops for South Carolina.
The Camels return to action at Eakes on Sunday in a 7 p.m. kickoff against Davidson.
