Camels travel to Troy for weekend series

BUIES CREEK — Campbell baseball hits the road for the first time this season for a three-game series against Troy beginning on Friday, Feb. 20 at Riddle-Pace Field in Troy, Ala. All three games are scheduled to be streamed on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT 

  • Campbell returned to the win column securing its sixth straight victory over East Carolina by a final score of 2-1, on Tuesday night at Jim Perry Stadium. 
  • RMason Smith settled into the game quickly retiring six of the first eight batters he faced. The right-hander totaled 5.1 innings of work allowing just five hits and picked up five strikeouts in his season debut.
  • Five different Camels picked up hits in the contest as Trent Rumley led the offense going 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Rumley extended his hitting streak to four games and Jett Music extended his reached based streak to four.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Campbell and Troy meet for the 24th time in program history. 
  • Troy leads the overall series 16-7
  • The Trojans have won the last five matchups.
  • The programs will meet for the first time since the 2005 season when the Camels were swept in Troy. 
  • The Camels are looking for their first win over Troy since March 27, 2004 when the programs were a part of the Atlantic Sun Conference. 

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

  • Troy opened its 2026 campaign dropping its series at Mercer. The Trojans fell in the first two games before picking up its first win of the season in game three of the series. Troy also fell to #3 Mississippi State in Starkville, 7-13, in its first midweek of the season. 
  • Offensively, four players are batting over .400 which is paced by infielder Aaron Piasecki who is batting .500. Piasecki is 6-for-12 on the season including a home run and four RBI. He also leads the team with seven walks. The Trojans are batting .297 collectively which sits top-100 in the country.
  • Tommy Egan leads the pitching staff with a 3.60 ERA in 5.0 innings of work. He has allowed two runs on three hits and ties the team-high with six strikeouts.

CAA PITCHER OF THE WEEK 

  • Left-hander Lleyton Grubich earned his first CAA Pitcher of the Week honors as announced by the conference on Monday. 
  • Grubich picked up the win on Friday night in Campbell's 5-2 win over Cal Poly 
  • The junior limited Cal Poly to one run on five hits over 5.2 innings of work and retired the first eight batters he faced. He shut out the Mustangs over the first five frames and issued just one walk in the outing. 

A WIN WOULD 

  • Be the third of the 2026 campaign 
  • Be the 28th win under head coach Chris Marx
  • Be the first win over Troy since the 2004 season. 
  • Be the 1,042 win in program history

CAROLINA ON MY MIND

  • Of the 55 games on the schedule, Campbell will stay in the state of North Carolina for 42 of those games. 
  • The Camels will compete against 11 of the 17 Division I opponents from North Carolina. 

YEAR TWO AT THE HELM

  • Chris Marx enters his second season at the helm of Campbell baseball. 
  • Marx led the Camels with ninth toughest non-conference strength of schedule last season. 
  • He led the squad to a 25-31 overall record and 15-12 conference record along with the Camels first appearance in the CAA tournament.

CAMEL STRONG

  • Campbell comes into the season with one of the toughest non-conference strengths of schedule in the country. 
  • The schedule features seven opponents that went to postseason play last year including College World Series Runner-up Coastal Carolina and Super Regional hosts Duke and North Carolina. 
  • The Camels will face 12 opponents that finished last season in the top-100 in RPI.
  • Campbell will square off against five conference or conference tournament champions from a season ago including Cal Poly, East Carolina Wright State, Coastal Carolina, and North Carolina.

PRODUCTION RETURNS

  • In 2026, Campbell returns just about seven of its every day starters including stat leaders in home runs, RBIs, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, triples, and runs scored. 
  • The Camels return
    • 73.4% of hits
    • 74.7% of home runs
    • 74.8% of RBIs
    • 76.4% of runs scored

PRESEASON NODS

  • Four Camels earned CAA preseason honors and the Camels were picked to finish third in the south division.
  • Infielder Joey Morton, utility Jett Music, and outfielder Joe Simpson earned a spot on the preseason team and left-handed pitcher Lleyton Grubich was named honorable mention.

  • Campbell continues its road swing making the trip to Coastal Carolina for a midweek matchup on Feb. 24 in Conway, S.C. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Springs Brooks Stadium and will be streamed on ESPN+.
