Deanda and Kleweno Pace Camels To Series Win Over
Belmont
BUIES CREEK, N.C.-- The
Campbell University baseball team used a complete game performance
by Matt Kleweno and a home run by Sal Deanda to defeat Belmont
University 6-1 in game two of an A-Sun double header. The Bruins
got a strong outing from Shane Haas in game one to take a 2-1
decision.
In game one, Belmont took and early 1-0 lead when
Steve Sundstrom singled with two out, moved to second on a wild
pitch by Camel starting pitcher Josh Blades, and scored on an RBI
double to Joel Novak.
The Bruins doubled their lead in
the fifth inning as Jay Pettus and Josh Radke opened the frame with
back-to-back singles. Jason Warpool delivered a one out single to
score Pettus and give Belmont a 2-0 lead.
The Camels fought back to cut
the Bruin lead to 2-1 in the sixth inning, on a triple by Tom
Rispoli that scored Jason Brown from first base.
Campbell threatened in the ninth
when Alston Hatch led the inning off with a single, but he was
erased trying to steal. Belmont closer Will Tucker collected the
final two outs to earn his eighth save of the season.
Haas pitched 5.1 innings,
allowing one run on four hits and struck out four. Blades was the
hard luck loser, pitching a complete game, allowing two runs, while
scattering nine hits.
In game two, the Camels got an
early 2-0 when Derek Barrows two out double scored Denada and
Phillip Strickland.
Chris Wiley's two out single to
left field scored Alston Hatch from second and gave the Camels a
3-0 lead in the fourth inning.
Deanda added to that lead when
he led the fifth inning off with a solo home run to left field.
Deanda finished the weekend series going, 6-10, with two RBI and
two runs scored.
Campbell added a pair of
insurance runs in the sixth to make the score 6-0. Hatch led the
inning off with a single and scored on Jon Sanderlin's pinch-hit
double to left center field. Sanderlin moved to third on a single
by Wiley and scored on a wild pitch by Belmont reliever Justin
Jordan.
The Bruins touched up Kleweno
for a run in the ninth. Clay Peterson opened the inning with a walk
and moved to second on a ground out by Sundston and scored on a
single by Wade Walter, that went just under the glove of a diving
Deanda. With Walter on first, Novak hit a hard line drive to short
that was snared by a diving Rispoli, who caught Walter off first
for the double play to end the game.
Kleweno collects his third win
of the season going the distance, allowing just four hits and
walking three. Belmont starter Ryan Herzberg suffers the loss
dropping his record to 2-3. Herzberg went 4.1 innings, allowing
four runs, walking three batters and striking out a career high
seven.
With the win the Camels
improve their record to 17-22 overall and 11-16 in the A-Sun, while
the Bruins drop to 20-15 overall and 14-10 in the league. The
Camels return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Charleston
Southern. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. The Bruins will play
Tuesday at Middle Tennessee at 7:00 p.m.
