Campbell Blanks Belmont 1-0; Improves to 3-1 in Atlantic
Sun
NASHVILLE, TENN. -
Sonny Guadarrama's 77th minute penalty was the lone goal of the
match and Campbell won its second-straight Atlantic Sun Conference
men's soccer outing on Thursday night at Belmont.
The Fighting
Camels (7-3-1, 3-1-0) earned their fourth victory over the last
five games and moved one win away from securing a berth in next
month's six-school A-Sun Championship tournament.
Belmont's (5-5-1,
2-2-0) two-match win streak ended as Campbell keeper Aaron Johnson
notched his third shutout of the year, his second in as many
outings.
Johnson had five
saves on the night and Campbell's record improved to 6-1-1 during
matches in which the freshman from St. Charles, Mo., keeper has
started.
With its seventh
victory of the year, Campbell notched the program's most wins since
the 1997 club went 8-11.
Guadarrama's goal
was his seventh of the year and the fourth game-winner for the
freshman midfielder from Cedar Park, Texas. Through 11 matches, he
has 18 points on seven goals and four assists.
Campbell
sophomore Willy Guadarrama, the nation's leading scorer with 33
points on 15 goals and three assists, was held scoreless for only
the fourth time in 11 games, but he helped set up the winning
sequence.
Willy
Guadarrama's shot fell to his younger brother's feet, and Sonny
Guadarrama was pulled down from behind inside the box as he
dribbled by a Belmont defender. He then beat Lipscomb keeper Kyle
Roelke from the spot, converting his second penalty in as many
chances this year.
Belmont held a
15-6 edge in shots, but only a 5-3 advantage in attempts on
target. Roelke ended the night with two saves.
Campbell
continues its three-match road swing on Saturday in a 7:00 p.m.
start at Lipscomb (3-6-1, 1-3-0), a 2-1 winner over Gardner-Webb
Thursday. [Box Score]
