College of
Charleston Halts Campbell Win Streak
1-0
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Rondell Honora scored the game's lone goal in
the 22nd minute and the College of Charleston ended Campbell's
five-match win streak with a 1-0 men's soccer victory Wednesday
night.
The
Cougars (8-7-2) are just the second team to hold Campbell's
high-powered attack scoreless this season. West Virginia shut out
the Camels 2-0 on Sept. 1 in the season opener.
Campbell (10-4-1), which entered the game ranked eighth nationally
in goals scored per game, played without freshman Sonny Guadarrama,
the nation's 16th-leading scorer, who sat out due to yellow card
accumulation.
The
Camels had not lost since a 2-1 setback at North Florida on Oct. 1.
Earlier this week, Campbell was ranked 10th in the NSCAA South
Region poll, the first time CU earned a regional ranking in 10
years.
CofC limited Campbell's Willy Guadarrama, who leads the nation with
40 points on 18 goals and 4 assists, to just three shots (two on
goal) for the evening.
Keepers Hunter Gilstrap and Corbin Waller split the game in the
nets for CofC while recording the shutout. CU keeper Aaron Johnson
made five saves.
CofC nearly took the lead in the seventh minute when Honora and
Darren Toby both hit the crossbar on successive attempts.
Honora's second goal of the season came on a header at 21:06.
Gilstrap sent a free kick from half-field to the top of the area,
where Scott Milroth headed on to Honora.
CofC finished with a 13-11 edge in shots.
The
match was the first between the former A-Sun rivals since the 1997
season when the Camels defeated the Cougars twice by one-goal
margins. CofC left the A-Sun for the Southern Conference the next
year. Charleston defeated Campbell in both the 1995 and 1996 A-Sun
title matches. [Box Score]
