Guadarrama Nets Five; Campbell Defeats Stetson 7-0
BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Willy Guadaramma scored five goals and Campbell
defeated Stetson 7-0 Thursday night in Atlantic Sun Conference
men's soccer action.
A
sophomore from Cedar Park, Texas, Guadarrama took over the national
goal-scoring lead with 15 strikes through 10 matches. He scored his
first goal just 26 seconds into the contest, had a hat trick by the
32nd minute, and four in the opening half.
Campbell (6-3-1, 2-1-0) won for the third time in four outings
behind its largest offensive output since beating the Hatters 7-1
on Oct. 21, 1995 in DeLand, Fla. CU's seven-goal margin of victory
was its largest since a 7-0 blanking of Georgia State on Sept. 16,
1995.
Guadarrama matched the highest scoring effort by a Campbell player
since CU joined the NCAA Division I ranks in 1977. David Doyle
twice scored five times in a game during the 1986 season, against
Winthrop and Augusta.
Gary Woodward holds Campbell's all-time school record for goals in
a match with seven vs. Monmouth on Sept. 25, 1970.
The
Fighting Camels are off to their best start since the '95 club
opened with a 6-2-2 record over its first 10 games. Campbell has
already produced its most wins in a year since the '97 team
finished 8-11-0.
On
a night where the teams played through a steady rain, Guadarrama
put the Camels in front in the first minute when he stripped the
ball from Stetson keeper Jeff Smeraglinolo and finished into the
empty net.
Rudy Mehrens nearly equalized on a low shot through traffic in the
10th minute that Campbell keeper Aaron Johnson steered wide of the
left post.
Guadarrama controlled a failed clearance in the Stetson box, then
hit a right-footed shot from about 15 yards away to put the Camels
in front 2-0 in the 28th minute.
He
then secured his second hat trick of the year in the 32nd minute
when Smeraglinolo was unable to hold Julian Fulton's shot, and
Guadarrama netted the rebound.
Just over three minutes later Fulton scored on a breakaway when
Scott Phillips lofted a pass over the Hatter back four and the
Dale, Texas sophomore sent home for a 4-0 advantage.
In
the 42nd minute, Guadarrama scored his fourth goal of the opening
half when he stole the ball from Hatter defender Ryan Hare at
midfield, then broke in free on Smeraglinolo. Guadarrama's younger
brother added his sixth goal of the season when he finished a 1-2
combo with Fulton and pushed the Camel edge to 6-0 with 54 seconds
left in the opening period.
Stetson's best chance of the game came in the 49th minute when
Brian Bell's shot was cleared off the line by Camel back Michael
Hutchison.
Willy Guadarrama finished his five-goal effort in the 68th minute
with a right-footed shot that hit the roof of the net inside the
right post.
Johnson finished with four saves for his second shutout of the year
while lowering his A-Sun leading goals-against average to 1.08.
Campbell ended the night with a slim 13-12 edge in shots, but nine
of CU's efforts were on target, compared to five for the Hatters.
Stetson took 12 corner kicks to a pair for the Camels.
With 33 points on 15 goals and three assists through 10 games,
Guadarrama has produced Campbell's highest-scoring season since
Pasi Kinturi finished the 1996 campaign with 37 points on 13 goals
and 11 assists in 20 matches.
Guadarrama moved past Jacksonville's Tommy Krizanovic (12 goals in
10 games) for the NCAA Division I scoring lead. Aaron King of North
Carolina State has 11 goals in as many outings entering this
weekend's action. Jason Garey of Maryland, and Stetson's Tanner
Wolfe have scored 10 this year.
Campbell continues its two-game A-Sun home stand on Saturday with a
7:00 p.m. kick-off against Mercer. [Box Score]
