JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. The Campbell University baseball team
was defeated in both games of Saturday's doubleheader by the Bucs
of East Tennessee State.
ETSU defeated Campbell in a 21 to 11 shootout in game one. The Bucs completed the
doubleheader sweep with a 9-3 victory in game two. Campbell drops to 11-9 on the season
but more importantly dips to 2-6 in league play. Meanwhile, ETSU improves to 9-10
overall and 3-6 in the Atlantic Sun.
In game one,
Campbell got the scoring started by posting three runs on the board
in the first, second, and fourth innings. After the top of the fourth inning,
Campbell led 9-2, but the lead would not hold.
ETSU would rally
and take a commanding led on the Camels, one the Camels could not
recover from. The Bucs
scored five runs in the fourth and six runs in the fifth to take a
13-9 lead after five complete.
Campbell cut into
the ETSU lead in half by scoring two runs in the top of the
sixth. ETSU would close the
door on the Camels thanks to their explosion in the bottom of the
sixth inning.
ETSU would bring
11 batters to the plate in the inning and would score eight runs on
six hits. The ETSU catcher,
Danny Petro had two home runs and three RBI in the inning. Following the eight run sixth,
ETSU led the Camels 21-11.
In the top of the
seventh, the Camels would be retired in order. Due to Atlantic Sun policy, the game
ended after the top of the seventh because of the 10 run lead.
Jeff Rydman
(Gladstone, Mo.) got the start on the bump for the Camels against
the Bucs. Rydman pitched
just four innings giving up eight runs on 11 hits. Jonathon Lopez (Vineland, N.J.) would
relieve Rydman but would only record one out. Lopez faced seven batters and allowed
five runs on six hits and was credited with the loss dropping his
record to 1-3 on the season.
Logan Davis (Ft.
Cobb, Okla.) would finish the game for the Camels on the
mound. Davis pitched the
final 1.2 innings during which time eight runs came in to score on
just six hits.
Ryan Hamme
(Wilmington, N.C.) and Josh Holskey (Roanoke, Va.) were the
offensive leaders for the Camels at the plate. Hamme finished game one 4-of-5 with
two RBI and scored three runs. Meanwhile, Holskey finished 2-of-4 and
drove in two runs.
ETSU hurler Darren
Caldwell would be credited with the win and improve to 3-0 on the
season. Caldwell pitched
the final 1.2 innings allowing no runs, no hits and struck out one
batter.
Aside from Danny
Petro's big inning, ETSU third baseman Bo Reeder batted for the
cycle against the Camels.
Reeder began the day with a single in the first inning, followed by
a home run in the fourth, a double in the fifth and the cycle was
completed with a triple to the center field gap that wound up
scoring two runs.
Game two was
played at nearly a marathon pace. The total game time for the 9-3 ETSU
victory was just under two hours, which is a sharp contrast to some
of Campbell's three and a half hour contests that they have been
apart of.
Senior Ryan Hamme
got the call on the hill for the Camels in game two. The senior would throw a complete
game, which is the second for the Camels this season. Jeff Rydman threw a complete game in
early March at Florida A&M. However, Hamme would not receive the
same positive results.
Hamme pitched
eight innings, while allowing nine runs on 13 hits with seven
strikeouts. In the bottom
of the eighth, with the Camels already trailing 5-3, Danny Petro
hit a grand slam off the fair/foul pole in left field. That would push the Bucs lead to 9-3
and that would be the final tally in the game. With the loss, Hamme's season record
falls to 2-2.
Zach Johnson
(Smithfield, N.C.) and Matt Keen (Four Oaks, N.C.) were offensive
leaders for the Camels in game two. Zach Johnson finished the day 2-of-4
at the dish with a RBI and a run scored. One of Johnson's hits was a solo home
run that tied the score at one a piece in the top of the
fourth.
Matt Keen had a
two-run home run in the top of the fifth. The home run by Keen would give the
Camels a 3-1 lead, one that unfortunately would not be held. The runs scored by Stephen
Parsons and Matt Keen would be the final runs scored by the
Camels.
ETSU pitcher
Darren Caldwell would be credited with his fourth victory of the
season after pitching four innings and giving up just one hit. Danny Petro paced the Bucs at
the plate in game two.
Petro finished 2-of-4 with a run score and five RBI.
Campbell will
return home to Taylor Field on Tuesday as they will face in-state
foe East Carolina. First
pitch between the Camels and the Pirates is slated for 6:30
p.m.
