BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Etienne Boulanger scored twice and assisted on
UNC Wilmington's other goal in a 3-1 Seahawk win Wednesday night
over Campbell at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
The Seahawks, ranked 23rd nationally in this week's College Soccer
News poll, claimed their third-straight victory and improved to 4-1
on the season. Campbell, which allowed just two goals over its
first three outings, dropped to 0-2-2.
After a scoreless first half, both teams created chances in the
first four minutes of the second period.
Mitchell Cardenas' 46th-minute pass sprang Brian Urioste free, but
UNCW keeper Brandon Miller dove to his right to parry a shot headed
for the near post over the goal line for a corner kick.
Less than three minutes later, Boulanger found Andy McDaniel open
in the box, but Camel keeper Ryan Amons corralled the attempt from
15 yards.
However, a Camel turnover in the midfield led to Boulanger's first
goal. Thomas Driver played the ball forward to Seph Babington, who
then split the Camel back four. Boulanger ran on to the ball; then
lifted it over a charging Amons to finish the counter.
Campbell nearly equalized in the next three minutes when Keegan
Terry got behind the UNCW final line, but his effort from a sharp
angle sailed high and wide of the upper right corner. In the 53rd
minute, Terry's touch gave Jared Girard a chance in the box, but
the freshman midfielder shot in Miller's reach.
Boulanger provided the service to Tyler Clare in the 71st minute
for what proved to be the game winner. Again, a Camel miscue in
the midfield resulted in a Seahawk goal.
After the Camels pulled a defender for a third attacker in the
final minutes, Boulanger finished the evening. A short clearance
off the Camel goal line fell to Allen Lomax, who squared the ball
across the six-yard box that was cleared, but not away. Boulanger
then deposited the ball in the net for his third strike of the
year.
Campbell avoided the shutout in the 90th minute when Justin Smith
was pulled down in the UNCW area and Mitchell Cardenas deposited
the ensuing penalty kick into the lower left corner of the net.
UNCW finished with a 13-10 edge in shots, 6-4 in shots on goal.
Both keepers finished with three saves. The victory was UNCW's
second in a row in the series after the Camels had claimed
four-straight against their most frequent opponent in the program's
48-year history. CU leads the all-time set by a 24-20-1
margin.
"I thought we were right there with the 23rd-ranked team in the
country," said first-year Campbell head coach Steve Armas. "We
created some chances, but made three costly mistakes in the
midfield. UNCW is a good team, and good teams punish those
errors."
Defending Colonial Athletic Association champion UNCW was the
second of five opponents on the Camel schedule that participated in
last year's NCAA College Cup.
The third of those five, Charlotte, visits the Eakes Complex on
Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off. The 49ers are coming off a 2-0
victory Tuesday over 11th-ranked Wake Forest.
