BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Four Campbell wrestlers have been named to the 2021 All-Southern Conference team, while four Camels were named to the league's all-freshman squad.
Benjamin Barton at 157 pounds,
Austin Murphy at 174,
Caleb Hopkins at 184 and
Chris Kober at 197 were all named All-SoCon.
Four more Camels were also named to the SoCon All-Freshman team, including
Bilal Bailey at 165 pounds,
Gabriel Hixenbaugh at 133,
Levi Hopkins at 197 and
Justin Rivera at 141.
Appalachian State's Will Formato (165 pounds) was named the 2020-21 SoCon Wrestler of the Year, while Chattanooga 157 pounder Weston Wichman earned SoCon Freshman of the Year honors.
Barton, a 2019 SoCon champ and NCAA qualifier, finished the regular season at 9-1 overall and 6-1 in SoCon duals, winning his first nine bouts of the year. The senior, a
2020-21 Preseason All-SoCon pick, was named the SoCon Wrestler of the Week on
January 9, and is ranked No. 24 in the nation at 157.
Austin Murphy went a perfect 10-0 in the regular season, working a 7-0 SoCon slate in his first season as a full time starter in the Campbell lineup. The junior is ranked No. 14 at 174 pounds, and was named the SoCon Wrestler of the Week on
January 27.
A
two-time SoCon Wrestler of the Week, Hopkins finished the regular season 9-1 overall and a perfect 7-0 in SoCon matches, with his only loss of the year coming to No. 2 Hunter Bolen from Virginia Tech. The Palmer, Alaska native is ranked No. 23 nationally at 184 pounds.
Kober, posted a 4-0 record in 2021, all against conference opponents, including three bonus point wins. The senior is ranked No. 27 at 197 pounds, seeking his second NCAA berth after claiming the 184 pound SoCon title in 2019.
Bailey went 3-4 overall in his first collegiate season, with all three victories coming in SoCon duals, going 3-2 in conference matchups at 165, including a 30 second pin to close out CU's
42-0 win over Davidson.
Hixenbaugh, a redshirt freshman, was the Camels' full-time starter at 133 pounds throughout the season, going 6-4 overall and 4-3 in SoCon matches, including a pair of technical falls and a major decision.
Hopkins was one of six Camels to go undefeated in SoCon matches, posted a 3-0 conference ledger and a 4-2 overall mark at 197 pounds. He won his final four matches of the season, punctuated by a pin in Campbell's
34-7 win at The Citadel.
Wrestling at 141 pounds, Rivera was 4-0 overall on the season and 2-0 in two dual appearances, both in SoCon action, claiming decisions against Gardner-Webb and Davidson.
Campbell, ranked No. 22 in the NCWA team poll and No. 19 by InterMat, has claimed the last two SoCon tournament championships, and three of the last four. The Camels claimed their third SoCon dual title in 2021, completing their second consecutive undefeated conference season.
