BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell is ranked No. 5 in the first Mid-Major Top-20 poll of the season, released on Thursday by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
Formulated in 2017, the Mid-Major Top 20 concentrates on programs outside the traditional "Power 5" conferences.
CU is also ranked No. 25 in the latest
NWCA Coaches Poll, while four Camels are ranked individually heading into this weekend's Chippewa Challenge at Central Michigan.
Josh Heil headlines the group, ranked No. 9 at 149 pounds, while a trio of Campbell's upper weights carry individual ranking, including No. 18
Austin Murphy at 174 pounds, No. 25
Caleb Hopkins at 184 and No. 25
Taye Ghadiali at heavyweight.
At 4-2 overall on the season, the Camels picked up a 22-11 win over
then-16th ranked Lehigh, just announced as the No. 1 team in the NWCA Mid-Major poll. Campbell's November win over the Mountain Hawks marked the first ever for a Southern Conference program Lehigh. CU also
topped Virginia 21-15, defeating the Cavaliers for the first time in program history and picking up their first dual victory over an ACC foe since topping Duke in 2013.
Campbell opened its 2021-22 SoCon slate with a 47-3 win over Bellarmine, the program's 17
th consecutive SoCon dual victory, a streak that dates back to the 2018-19 season.
Campbell heads to the CMU Chippewa Challenge on Sunday, taking on American at 11 a.m., followed by CSU Bakersfield at 1:00 p.m. and the host Chippewas at 3:00 p.m. The Camels return home on January 23, hosting The Citadel.
