Campbell
Blanks Gardner-Webb 2-0 For
Fifth-Straight Win
BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Aaron Johnson recorded his fourth shutout of
the year and Campbell won its fifth-straight men's soccer match
with a 2-0 victory over Gardner-Webb Saturday at the Eakes Athletic
Complex.
The
Fighting Camels (10-3-1, 5-1-0 A-Sun) secured the program's first
winning season since the 1996 campaign as Matt Lightner and Willy
Guadarrama provided the goals.
Johnson, a freshman keeper from St. Charles, Mo., notched his third
clean sheet during CU's five-match win streak and lowered his
league-leading goals-against average to 0.88 by making six
saves.
Lightner, a sophomore from Columbia, Mo., who like Johnson is a
product of the Scott Gallagher club program, scored his first goal
of the year in the 33rd minute. Guadarrama added his nation-leading
18th strike of the season with 5:32 remaining in the contest.
The
win gave CU its longest winning streak since the 1996 squad won
five-straight late in the season. During its five-match streak,
Campbell has outscored its opponents by a 16-2 margin.
After a scoreless half hour, Sonny Guadarrama curled a pass over
the Gardner-Webb back four and Lightner broke in free on GWU keeper
Tyler Kettering. Lightner's bending effort tipped inside the right
post. The assist ran Sonny Guadarrama's point streak to
five-straight games in which the freshman has recorded either a
goal or assist for the Camels.
Guadarrama again put a teammate in behind the Bulldog back line in
the 40th minute, but Kettering's foot save on Scott Phillips'
breakaway kept the margin at one.
Gardner-Webb (7-7-2, 1-6-0) nearly equalized in the final 15
seconds of the opening half when a clearance fell to Chris
Salvagione's feet at the top of the area, but Johnson was able to
stop a hard, low shot inside the box.
Ryan Snodgrass' 56th minute header beat Johnson, but bounced off
the left post. The Camel keeper then produced a full-stretch save
on Salvagione's dipping shot from outside the box 10 minutes
later.
Willy Guadarrama provided an insurance goal in the 85th minute.
Alex Bruemmer sent a pass to Guadarrama at mid-field and the
sophomore forward from Cedar Park, Texas ran past the GWU defense,
then dribbled by Kettering at the top of the area before slotting
home a left-footed shot.
He
ran his season scoring total to 40 points on 18 goals and four
assists in 14 games. Sonny Guadarrama, Willy's younger brother, has
25 points on 10 goals and five assists. The duo has scored 28 of
Campbell's 36 goals on the year.
Campbell travels to the College of Charleston Wednesday for a 7:00
p.m. kick-off. Gardner-Webb hosts Florida Atlantic Thursday. [Box Score]
