BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell's
Noah Gonser has been named the 2020 Southern Conference Wrestler of the Year, highlighting five Camels on the league's all-conference team.
Joining the 133-pound Gonser on the 10-man All-SoCon team are
Josh Heil at 141 pounds,
Quentin Perez at 165,
Andrew Morgan at 184 and
Jere Heino at heavyweight.
Jason Kraisser at 149 pounds was also named to the league's all-freshman team.
Gonser is the first Camel to be named SoCon Wrestler of the Year, while the team's five all-conference selections is also a single-season program record.
A redshirt senior, Gonser finished the 2019-20 regular season 27-5 overall and 10-2 in dual matchups, including a perfect 6-0 SoCon ledger on the way to his second All-SoCon team honor. All six of his SoCon matches ended in bonus point victories, including five pins.
Gonser was named the
SoCon Wrestler of the Week on January 15 following a 3-0 day at the Duals on the Diamond, including a win over Iowa State's Todd Small, then ranked No. 21 in the nation. He was later named the conference's
January Wrestler of the Month after going 7-0 in the first month of 2020.
The Grand Blac, Mich. native, the winner of 11-straight heading into the SoCon Championships, is ranked No. 7 by the NCAA Coaches Panel, and as high as No. 8 in the national polls.
Heil becomes Campbell's first three-time All-SoCon performer (2017, 2019, 2020), collecting the honor for the second straight season. The redshirt junior has gone 26-4 overall, including 7-3 in duals and 4-0 in league action. Currently ranked as high as No. 9 in the country at 141 pounds, Heil is a two-time SoCon Wrestler of the Month, taking top honors in both
November and
December, also picking up a pair of SoCon weekly nods, taking the
Navy Classic title, as well as making a run to the
Midlands Championship finals.
Earning his second career All-SoCon team appearance, Perez is 23-6 overall and 10-2 in duals this season, including a 6-0 mark in conference bouts. Ranked No. 15 by the NCAA Coaches Panel, and as high as No. 8 in the national polls, Perez was named SoCon Wrestler of the Week on
November 6 after winning the 165 title at the Southeast Open. The redshirt senior also won his weight class at the Reno Tournament of Champions in December, and carries an eight match winning streak.
Picking up his first All-SoCon honor, Morgan is 27-5 overall at 184 and 11-1 in dual bouts, including a perfect 6-0 in SoCon matchups. He finishes the regular season on an eight match winning streak, with his last loss, and only defeat in dual action, coming against top-ranked Zahid Valencia of Arizona State at the Duals on the Diamond. Ranked as high as No. 6 in the nation at 184 pounds (FloWrestling), Morgan has collected five wins over ranked opponents this season. The Fountain Valley, Calif. Native was named SoCon Wrestler of the Week twice, first after
topping then No. 6 Nino Bonaccorsi of Pitt in Campbell's dual opener, and again following his victory
over No. 14 Matthew Waddell of Chattanooga in February.
Heino was named All-SoCon for the second time, also earning a spot on the 10-man team in 2018. The heavyweight finished the regular season 21-4 overall with a 10-2 dual mark and a perfect 6-0 record in conference bouts. A Helsinki, Finland native, Heino has been ranked as high as No. 6 in the national polls this season, and currently sits No. 13 in the NCAA Coaches Panel rankings. The redshirt senior, who claimed individual tournament championships at the Navy Classic and Reno Tournament of Champions, was named SoCon Wrestler of the Week on
February 19 following a 2-0 week that included a decision over No. 24 Cary Miller of Appalachian State, and his quickest fall of the season, pinning VMI's Robbie Adelstein in just 45 seconds.
Entering the Campbell lineup in mid-January, Kraisser earned a spot on the SoCon's All-Freshman team, going 21-8 overall with a 9-2 dual record and a 5-2 mark in conference outings with 11 total pins. Finishing the regular season winning nine of his final 11 matches, Kraisser has been ranked as high as No. 30 in The Open Mat. The Ellicott City, Md. also placed at the Southeast Open and the Southern Scuffle.
The 2020 SoCon Championships will be held March 8 in Boone, N.C., hosted by Appalachian State at the Holmes Convocation Center. Competition begins at 10:00 a.m., with the championship rounds scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
There will be 14 automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Championships on the line on Sunday, as allocated to the SoCon, with two qualifiers at 149, 174, 184 and 285, and one at the remaining six weight classes.
Following the SoCon tournament, qualifying Camels will head to the 2020 NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Minn., March 19-21.
