Hall of Fame
The first female student-athlete to earn All-America honors in Campbell history, Antionette Matthews Car was inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame in October 1996.
Â
A 1986 graduate, Matthews was twice selected first-team NAIA All-American while playing for Coach Wanda Watkins’ basketball team.
Â
A four-year letter winner in basketball and softball, Matthews was named the basketball team’s MVP an unprecedented three times. She was honored as Campbell’s Outstanding Female Athlete following her sophomore, junior and senior campaigns.
Â
During her playing career, Matthews set school records for points (1,597) and rebounds (1,028) in a career. She scored a school record 40 points in a game vs. Pembroke State during her junior year, a mark that still stands nearly 40 years later. In 100 career games, she scored in double figures 87 times. She was the first Campbell athlete to have her jersey number (34) retired.
Â
Following graduation, she served as assistant basketball coach and head softball coach and earned the distinction of being the first African-American head coach in school history. She also earned a master’s in business administration.
Â
She continued her coaching career with stops as assistant basketball coach at Elizabeth City State and Norfolk State, where she helped her team win back-to-back MEAC titles in 1995 and 1996.
