Three-sport letterman James Sessoms was inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 2, 1993.  He won 12 letters at Erwin (N.C.) High School and was selected to the all-time Erwin High football team as a halfback.

After entering Campbell in 1936, Sessoms won letters in football, basketball and baseball.  Coached by Gaffney Smith and Clarence Stasavich, Sessoms captained both the football and baseball teams during his sophomore year.  He recorded a team-leading .445 batting average in 1938 after leading the football team to a runner-up finish in the 1937 state championship.

After graduating from Campbell in 1938, Sessoms entered Emory & Henry College and again lettered in three sports.  As a senior, he was captain of the baseball team, but a shoulder injury kept him out of basketball season.  He was appointed coach of the Emory & Henry women’s basketball team, an opportunity that helped him land a coaching position at Galax (Va.) High School following graduation.

Sessoms served his country in the United States Navy during World War II then entered the business community in Mount Airy, N.C., and later in Maryville, Tenn.
