A standout on the 1941 North State Junior College championship basketball team, John T. Johnson was inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 4, 1997.

Johnson was a star on the Harnett County American Legion baseball team that advanced to the 1939 state finals.  He played on Campbell’s basketball and baseball teams from 1940-42 while still a high school student.

Under the direction of Coach Fred Emmerson, Johnson played forward, while standing just 6-feet tall.  He was an outfielder for Coach Gaffney Smith’s baseball team.  Among Johnson’s teammates were Howard Auman and Hank Currin, both of whom are also enshrined in the Campbell Hall of Fame along with Coach Emmerson.

Johnson left Campbell in 1943 and joined the Eighth Air Force as an engineer gunner.  After returning to Harnett County, he began a 30-year stint as a clerk in the Buies Creek post office while also maintaining the family dairy farm.  He was a charter member of Memorial Baptist Church and his wife, Glynn, worked for many years as a nurse in the Campbell infirmary.
