James Mitchell “Hank” Currin was inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 7, 1995.  A key member of Coach Gaffney Smith’s 1941 baseball team, he led the Fighting Camels with a phenomenal .413 batting average.

Named for Campbell University’s founder, James Archibald Campbell, Currin studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before enrolling at Campbell.  He later studied aeronautical engineering at North Carolina State before entering the United States Air Corps, where he served in England and France as an aerial photographer for the 409th Bomb Squadron during World War II.  He returned to New York harbor on the day the war with Japan ended.

A native of Angier, Currin moved to Dunn in 1948 and became a successful businessman and community leader.  One of the original owners of C&D Insurance Agency in Angier, he was a tobacco auctioneer for 38 years in the Dunn and Fuquay markets.  A founder of the Dunn branch of the Bank of North Carolina, he served the bank for 30 years as a member of the Board of Directors.

His wife, the former Helen Buchanan of Warren County, served as a member of the Campbell Board of Trustees.  Mr. Currin passed away on Oct. 6, 2006.
