Howard Auman, a former two-sport letter winner, was inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991.

A native of West End, Auman attended Campbell from 1941-42 and also in 1946 after serving his country in World War II.  Auman lettered in both baseball and basketball and went on to a distinguished baseball career as a pitcher.

He began his pro career at Leaksville of the Bi-State League in 1942 prior to his military stint.  Upon his return, he gained all-star status with Sanford in the Tobacco State League in 1946 when he won 24 games, while losing only eight.

Auman also won 20 games the following season at Macon (Ga.) of the South Atlantic League.  Again, Auman was named to the league’s all-start team.  After spending spring training with the Chicago Cubs in 1948, Auman spent the season with Los Angeles of the Pacific Coast League and with Shreveport (La.) of the Texas League.

He pitched three more seasons in the Texas League, where he was an all-star performer before retiring from the pro ranks after the 1951 season.

Auman coached on the semi-professional level and retired after working in the business community in Sanford.  He passed away May 2, 2015 at the age of 93.
