All-American golfer Jay Overton was inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 1, 1988.  A native of Sanford, N.C., Overton led Campbell to back-to-back appearances in the NAIA National Tournament in 1972 and ’73.

Overton transferred to Campbell from Duke in 1971 and earned honorable mention All-America honors in 1972 under Coach Hargrove Davis.  In 1973 he was the NAIA individual co-champion and led Campbell to runner-up honors in the national tournament.

Overton joined Pinehurst Country Club as an assistant professional in 1973 and became head pro in 1975.  He moved on to Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Tarpon Springs, Fla., and served as Director of Golf for 30 years until he moved to Host Professional in 2008.

Overton was a member of the United States PGA Cup team in 1979 and won the Florida PGA Championship in ’85 and ’87.  He was recognized by Sports Illustrated in 1983 as national merchandizer of the year for club pros.

During the 1988 PGA Championship, Overton finished tied for 17th at even-par 284 at Oak Tree in Edmund, Okla.  He played in the PGA Championship eight times and the U.S. Open twice.

Overton competed in 42 PGA TOUR events before joining the PGA Senior Tour in 2000.  In 50 starts on what is now know as PGA TOUR Champions, Overton made the cut 47 times and posted eight top-10 finishes.
