Campbell Magazine: Forever Champions

Three-time golf All-American Sam Brewer was inducted into the Campbell Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 6, 1990.  Brewer, who finished among the top 10 individuals in three-straight NAIA national tournaments from ’69-71, led the Camels to the school’s only national championship – the 1970 men’s golf title.

A native of Raleigh, Brewer played on teams that finished third in the nation twice and first once in his three years after transferring from Wake Forest.  He played under coaches Danny Roberts and Hargrove B. Davis.

A 1971 graduate with a degree in business administration, Brewer was named head professional at Whispering Pines Country Club in Southern Pines, where he stayed until playing on the Florida Mini Tour in ’72.

Later in 1972, he accepted an assistant pro position at North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh.  He played on the New Zealand Tour in 1975 before returning to North Carolina one year later to become head professional at Roanoke Country Club in Williamston.  From 1977-86 he served as head pro at the Raleigh Country Club.

In 1986, Brewer was named head pro at North Ridge and stayed on at the club until retiring as Director of Golf in 2015.  He still serves as pro emeritus at North Ridge.
